Instagram addiction
Instagram addiction is a form of behavioral addiction where a person loses control over using a social network and spends time on it at the expense of real life. This phenomenon has become so widespread that in the scientific community it is considered a serious psychological problem. Why Does Dependence Arise The mechanism of dependence formation is related to the dopamine reward system in the brain. Every like, comment, or new follower causes a dopamine surge — a neurotransmitter responsible for the feeling of pleasure. This creates an effect similar to gambling: a person does not know when they will receive the next dose of approval, and therefore returns again and again. The news feed is built on algorithms that constantly suggest content that evokes an emotional response. Endless scrolling has no natural end, which deprives the user of the ability to stop on their own. Primary Symptoms Experts identify several signs indicating dependence. The first is the loss of control: a person spends more time in the app than they planned. The second is anxiety when unable to access the network. The third is using social media to escape real-life problems and relieve stress. The fourth is neglecting duties, work, studies, and face-to-face communication. Withdrawal syndrome is also observed: when trying to quit the app, a person experiences irritability, anxiety, and even physical discomfort. Impact on Mental Health Studies show that long-term use of Instagram is associated with increased levels of anxiety, depression, and a decrease in self-esteem. Especially vulnerable are teenagers and young people who compare their lives with filtered and idealized images of other users. The constant pursuit of likes forms a dependence on external evaluation.
